Nov. 22, 2011 — Though toy producers have made major safety strides in later a long time, many dangerous toys can still be found on store racks or online, a shopper guard dog bunch says in a new report.

Toys with little parts are choking hazards, and a few toys contain harmful chemicals, including lead, according to the report, “Trouble in Toyland,” by the U.S. Public Interest Inquire about Group (PIRG).

Concurring to the report, many toys are too loud and may lead to hearing harm. Others may pose choking dangers, including inflatables, which cause more choking passings than any other item for kids.

The organization did not rank toys in terms of degree of danger, but recorded nine as possibly poisonous for containing lead or chemicals called phthalates:

Funny Glasses, made by Kidding Around, due to phthalates. Rest Cover, made by Claire’s, for phthalates. Small Hands Love Book, made by Piggie Toes Press, for lead. Whirly Wheel, made by LL, for lead. Spritz Awards, made by Spritz, for lead. Hi Kitty eyeshadow/keychain, Hello Kitty/Sanrio, for lead. Tinkerbell Observe, Disney Pixies, for lead. Peace Sign Bracelet, Family Dollar, for lead. Honda bike, Honda, for lead. Choking Dangers

PIRG listed 12 toys or sorts of toys as posing choking hazards:

Wooden blocks set, manufactured by ToySmith. Sesame St. Doll Oscar, made by Sesame Workshop. Dinosaur multi pack, conveyed by Greenbrier International Inc. HABA natural product in a sack, made by HABA. Green elastic grape, made by iwako. Orange bear, 4M2U. Flat child blocks and square counting pieces, dispersed by Greenbrier Universal. 4 dollar box things, fabricated by Rhode Island Novelty. Little balls, varying manufacturers. Play ball x2, made by Sqishland. Unlabeled Canister toys — balls and marbles of changing manufacturers. Ball cross-bow, manufacturer not recorded.

The report warned that different inflatables, especially those promoting infant birthdays and famous toddler characters, posed danger for kids under age 8.

As for toys that posture commotion risks, PIRG recorded three toys:

Elmo’s World, Talking Cell Phone, Fischer-Price. Victorious Stereo Earphones, made by Nickelodeon. Hotwheels, Super Stunt Rodent BOMB, made by Hotwheels.

Toy Industry Comments

In anticipation of this year’s PIRG list, the Toy Industry Affiliation issued a statement on Nov. 14 warning that some groups as often as possible assault toys as hazardous, unfortunate, or unsafe but that such claims regularly are “unconfirmed” and “unnecessarily frighten parents.”

But PIRG officials, and Robert Adler, commissioner of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, say the modern report was the result of laboratory testing and a overview.

“Choking on small parts, small balls and balloons is still the driving cause of toy-related damage,” PIRG’s Nasima Hossain says in a news release. He notes that more than 400 children passed on of toy-related wounds between 1990 and 2010, which more than half of the fatalities were due to choking on little parts, inflatables or balls.

“Whereas most toys are safe, our researchers still found toys on the shelves that posture choking dangers and other toys that contain hazardous levels of harmful chemicals, counting lead,” she says.

The report records its key findings as:

Toys with high levels of harmful substances are still on store racks — up to 70 times the admissible limits of phthalates, a chemical that will posture formative risks for small children. Despite Buyer Product Security Commission (CPSC) benchmarks concerning little parts in toys for children under 3, PIRG reports it found toys on racks that still pose choking risks. Too, one toy was found that exceeded the hearing guidelines prescribed by the National Established on Deafness and other Communication Disorders.

Hossain notes within the news release that the CPSC has a unused database of both potential risks and reviewed items at

“Parents and toy suppliers have to be compelled to keep in mind that while the CPSC is doing a great work, it doesn’t test all toys on the shelves,” Hossain says. “The message of today is obvious. We cannot, must not, debilitate the most basic safety rules that ensure youthful children, America’s smallest buyers.”
